Victoria has begun vaccinating about 5,000 little penguins at Phillip Island and St Kilda to protect them against the deadly H5 bird flu, in what is believed to be the world’s largest vaccination program involving wild birds.

While vaccinating wild birds against the disease was challenging, the fact that the penguins returned home every night to Phillip Island and St Kilda made it possible to deliver the two doses necessary over a two-week period.
